Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Can it Help My Child’s Teeth?

Silver Diamine Fluoride “SDF”

The dental world is excited to introduce the product Silver Diamine Fluoride (“SDF”) to patients. Silver Diamine Fluoride is an FDA-approved liquid that is clinically applied to control active dental caries and prevent further progression of bacteria. While the ideal way to treat teeth with decay is by removing the decay and placing a restoration (filling), this alternative treatment allows us to stop decay with noninvasive methods, particularly with young children who are unable to withstand treatment.

Silver Diamine Fluoride is made up of two components: silver and fluoride. Silver acts as an anti-microbial agent that strengthens the underlying layer of your teeth called dentin. Fluoride is the active ingredient that puts a stop to tooth decay and helps prevent additional decay.

However, the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride does not eliminate the need for restorative dentistry to remove the bacteria but has been effective at prevention of further decay. With these two components silver and fluoride, SDF has shown the ability to inhibit dental decay.

What’s the downside? The major disadvantage is that the cavity will be stained a dark black in the process. Also, this treatment does not eliminate the need for restorative (i.e. fillings, crowns etc.) in the future, and is a temporary fix.

Who benefits from SDF treatment?

  • Very young children who cannot tolerate dental treatment
  • Young children with minimal dental decay, limited to the initial layers of the tooth

To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of SDF, please call our office today! Our staff and doctors will be happy to discuss this option further with you!
